Event registration is the difference between hoping people turn up and knowing who they are before they do.
Event registration is collecting the details of the people who intend to come. It is used where a ticket is the wrong word: a members' meeting, a training evening, a volunteer day, a parents' session. Payment may or may not be part of it, but the list is the point in either case.
What registration is for
It answers the questions you will otherwise ask at the last minute: how many chairs, how many lunches, how many handouts, how many people with a dietary requirement. Each of those is cheap to ask when someone registers and expensive to find out on the day.
It also gives you a way to reach everybody at once. When you have to move a room or cancel for weather, the register is the only list of the people who need to know, and a group chat is not a substitute for it.
Asking the right amount
Every extra question loses people. Ask for what you will actually use, and nothing you will not: a name, a way to reach them, and the one or two answers that change what you have to prepare. Course booking is the usual exception, where a level or a preference genuinely matters.
Closing matters as much as asking. If people can register for an event on the morning itself, your numbers are never final and the caterer is guessing. Close online registration the day before and take the stragglers at the desk instead.

Yes, per time slot. A capacity applies to free registrations exactly as it does to paid tickets, and a full slot can no longer be chosen.
