Managing devices
The phones with the scan app and the tablets at the desk in one list — giving them a name, pairing a tablet, attaching a payment terminal and switching a device off.

Under Point of sale → Devices you find every device that works for your organisation: the phones used for scanning at the entrance, and the tablets or laptops used for selling at the desk. This article explains what you see in that list and what you can do there.
Two types of device
| Type | What it is | How it gets into the list |
|---|---|---|
| Scanner | A phone or tablet with the scan app | By itself, as soon as somebody signs in to the scan app |
| Desk | A till device: the tablet or laptop the till runs on | You create it yourself with New device, or it comes into being by itself when you tap Till in the app |
The cash drawer, the Z report and possibly a payment terminal hang on a Desk device. A Scanner only checks tickets.
If you use the same tablet for scanning and as a till, it appears twice in the list: once as Scanner and once as Desk. That is not a mistake.
What you need beforehand
- The Owner or Administrator role. Other roles do not see this screen.
Reading the list

| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Name | What the device is called. A scanning phone first gets its make and model as its name |
| Type | Scanner or Desk |
| Venue | Which venue the device belongs to |
| Pairing | A tick if the desk device is currently paired with a tablet or laptop |
| Terminal | The payment terminal attached to it, or none |
| Last seen | When the device last signed in or paired; never if that has not happened yet |
| Active | Whether the device may be used |
If you work with till layouts at the bar, there is also a Till layout column; see Selling at the bar.
At the top you search by name. With the funnel icon (Filters) you show only the scanners or only the desk devices.
Giving a device a name
A name like "Samsung Galaxy A54" does not help you when something goes wrong. Give every device a name that says where it is: "Desk left", "Gate 2", "Side entrance".
- Click Edit next to the device.
- Change the Name.
- If you like, choose the Venue: the venue whose products and time slots this device shows.
- Click Save changes.
Pairing a tablet at the desk
If somebody opens the till in the app, the app pairs the tablet itself; then you do not need to do anything here. If you work with an ordinary browser, you pair once:
- Click New device. Fill in a Name, choose Desk under Type and choose the Venue. Click Create.
- In the list, click Create pairing code next to that device. A notification appears with a six-character code. That notification stays until you click it away, and says how long the code is valid (a quarter of an hour by default).
- On the tablet, open Point of sale in the menu and type in the code.
After that there is a tick under Pairing. The full explanation, also for the app, is in The counter till.
The Create pairing code, Link a terminal and Unpair device buttons only exist for desk devices. You do not pair a scanning phone: it signs in with the staff member's account.
Attaching a payment terminal
If you have ordered and registered a payment terminal with Mollie, the till can send the amount to it automatically.
- Click Link a terminal next to the desk device.
- Choose your terminal under Payment terminal.
- Confirm. The terminal's name appears in the Terminal column.
If the list is empty, there is no active Mollie connection yet, or the terminal has not been registered with Mollie yet. More about that in The counter till.
Unpairing a tablet
Click Unpair device next to a paired desk device and confirm. After that the tablet can only open the till again with a new pairing code. A till session that was still open simply stays in place.
Do this when a tablet has gone missing, or when you put a different tablet in that spot.
Switching a device off or deleting it
Open the device with Edit and switch Active off. What that does depends on the type:
- A Desk device can then no longer be paired, and the till no longer opens with it.
- For a Scanner, nothing changes about scanning. The scan app hangs on the staff member's account, not on the device. If you really want to shut a phone out, take away that staff member's access; see Scan app and scanning staff.
You can also delete: open the device and click Delete, or tick devices in the list and choose Delete selected. Only do that for devices you really will never see again. Old till sessions and scans stay, but no longer show a device after that. And if somebody signs in to the scan app again on a deleted phone, it simply appears in the list again.
What if …
What if a scanning phone is not in the list?
Then nobody has signed in to the scan app with it yet. Sign in, and the device appears by itself.
What if the till says the pairing code is not right?
The code has expired or has already been used. Make a new one with Create pairing code. If the device is inactive, pairing does not work: switch Active back on first.
What if I do not see "Create pairing code"?
Then it is a scanner. A pairing code only exists for a desk device.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to add every scanning phone here myself? No. A scanning phone appears by itself as soon as somebody signs in. Here you only give it a recognisable name.
Can I sell at the desk without a device? Yes. In the browser you then choose Continue without a device. Everything works, except the payment terminal, because that hangs on a device.
