Connecting your payment provider

The Settings → Payments screen, button by button — connecting, activating, disconnecting, test mode, and what the webhook URL is.

Connecting your payment provider

You have an account with a payment provider. Now you tell Passavo that it may use that account. That takes two minutes.

If you do not have an account yet, first go to Creating a Mollie account, Creating a Stripe account or Applying for Bancontact Pro.

What you need beforehand

  • The Owner role. Only an owner reaches this screen. An Administrator does not either: whoever can switch the provider decides where the money goes. See Staff and roles.
  • Your sign-in details with the provider. With Mollie and Stripe you sign in with them during the connection process, so keep your password and your two-step verification to hand.
  • With Bancontact Pro: your API key and the knowledge of whether it is for the test environment or for production.
  • Five minutes at a computer. Do not do this quickly on a phone between two meetings.

The screen

Go to Settings → Payments in the left-hand menu.

You now see three blocks one below the other: Mollie, Stripe and Bancontact Pro. Under each name is the state of play: Not connected yet, or Connected followed by

  • for Mollie, the name of your organisation at Mollie;
  • for Stripe, the number of your Stripe account (it starts with acct_);
  • for Bancontact Pro, the environment of your key: EXT or PROD.

Under the name there can be two badges: a green Active for the ticket shop on the provider your ticket shop uses, and an orange Test mode when a connection does not collect real money yet. See Test mode below.

The Settings → Payments screen with the three providers one below the other

With Mollie or Stripe, is there the red sentence This provider has not been set up on the platform yet, so connecting is not possible yet. instead of a button? Then that provider is not yet switched on in this installation. It is not a setting on your side: send a message to support.

Connecting Mollie or Stripe

With these two you paste no keys. You give permission via their own sign-in screen.

Step 1 — Click the button

In your provider's block click Connect your Mollie account or Connect your Stripe account.

Step 2 — Sign in with the provider

You leave Passavo and land on a screen of Mollie or Stripe itself. Take a look at your browser's address bar: it should say mollie.com or stripe.com. That is how you know you are typing your password in the right place.

Sign in as you are used to, with your two-step verification.

Step 3 — Give permission

You now see a screen listing what you are permitting.

With Mollie we only ask for the right to:

  • read your organisation and profile details;
  • start payments and read their status;
  • start refunds and read them.

Nothing more. Through that connection we cannot send your money to another account, cannot change your account and cannot adjust your payouts.

With Stripe the permission is broader: a standard connection via Stripe Connect gives access to your Stripe account. Passavo only uses it to start payments, look up their status and issue refunds. You can withdraw it at any time with Disconnect.

If you have several accounts with Stripe, choose the right one. With Mollie you choose the organisation; Passavo then uses the first profile of that organisation. You cannot choose a different profile here.

Then click the button that gives permission (Allow, Connect my Stripe account, or something along those lines).

Step 4 — Back in Passavo

You come back automatically to Settings → Payments, with the message The connection was successful. at the top. Your provider's block now says Connected.

A new connection immediately becomes the active provider for your ticket shop: it gets the green pill Active for the ticket shop, even if another provider was already active.

Go straight on to Testing with a payment of 1 cent.

Test mode

If the orange badge Test mode is in a provider's block, that connection does not collect real money.

Mollie in test mode

If you connect a Mollie account whose profile has not been verified yet, Passavo puts that connection in test mode. You can tell from the badge Test mode and the message This connection is in test mode in the Mollie block, and from the red message Your shop is in test mode at the top of your dashboard. While paying, Mollie shows a test page where you choose yourself whether the payment succeeds.

In test mode no real payments are made, not by your visitors either. An order paid this way is a test order:

  • it is marked TEST: in the list of orders, in the confirmation email, on the PDF and on the wallet pass;
  • it is left out of your dashboard and is not sent as a webhook to your integrations;
  • its tickets do not grant entry: the scanning app refuses them;
  • no invoice is issued, and a discount code or gift voucher that was used is not deducted.

Your visitor sees it too: the checkout page of your shop says that no real payment is made.

Test mode switches off by itself. As soon as Mollie approves your profile, Passavo takes the connection live — within fifteen minutes, and at the latest at the next payment. Already received the approval and don't want to wait? Then click Go live. If Mollie has not approved yet, Passavo tells you so and the connection stays in test mode. Disconnecting and connecting again is no longer needed.

Stripe and Bancontact Pro

  • Stripe gets the badge Test mode when the connection was made with Stripe's test environment. You cannot change that yourself: send a message to support. A Stripe account that has not been activated yet does not get that badge; it simply cannot accept payments yet.
  • Bancontact Pro gets the badge Test mode as long as you have saved a key for the Test environment (ext). For real money you save a key for Production (prod).

Connecting Bancontact Pro

Bancontact Pro works differently: there you do paste a key.

  1. Paste your API key into the Bancontact Pro API key field. You do not see the characters as you paste; that is as it should be.
  2. In the drop-down next to it choose the environment: Test environment (ext) or Production (prod).
  3. Click Save key.

If no other provider is active yet, Bancontact Pro then becomes the active provider for your ticket shop. If Mollie or Stripe is already active, it stays active; if you want to use Bancontact Pro after all, click Use this provider with Bancontact Pro. Passavo does not check the key when you save it: only the first payment shows whether it works. So make a test payment straight away.

Note: a key belongs to one environment. A test key in production gives error messages that seem to refer to nothing at all. So check this once too often rather than once too few.

The key is stored encrypted and disappears from the screen. If you want to replace it later, you simply paste a new one and click Replace key. That does not change which provider is active.

Which provider does your ticket shop use?

You can connect several, but your ticket shop uses one at a time. So your visitor only sees the payment methods of that one provider.

You recognise that active provider by the green pill Active for the ticket shop. If you want a different one, click Use this provider with that other one. The pill moves with it.

Existing orders stay with the provider they were paid with. A refund always goes via that provider, even if your ticket shop has since switched to another one — as long as that old provider is still connected.

The webhook URL

As soon as you are connected, a webhook URL appears in the block, something of the form https://{domein}/webhooks/mollie.

A webhook is an address the provider sends us a short message at as soon as something happens with a payment. That is how we know within a second that payment has been made, without anybody having to click refresh.

You do not have to do anything with it; that is also stated under the address: You do not need to enter this URL anywhere: we take care of that.

Provider How the address reaches the provider
Mollie It goes along automatically with every payment
Stripe It is set at platform level
Bancontact Pro It goes along automatically with every payment

Does a payment stay on Pending with you while the provider says it succeeded? Then that message has not arrived. Every incoming webhook is recorded, so that can be checked — write to us and we will look into it. See also When a payment fails.

Disconnecting

With Disconnect you break the connection. You first get a confirmation question.

What happens:

  • your ticket shop can no longer start any new payments via that provider;
  • with Stripe the permission is also withdrawn at Stripe itself, so that our application disappears from your dashboard;
  • your existing orders stay in place, with the reference to the provider they were paid with.

If you disconnect the active provider while another one is still connected, your ticket shop uses that other one, even though the green pill is then shown nowhere. So straight away click Use this provider with the provider you want to use.

Note: do not disconnect a provider you have sold tickets with for an event that still has to take place. A refund of those orders goes via that provider. Once it is disconnected you can no longer start one from Passavo: you get the message This organisation has no payment provider connected. and have to refund in that provider's own dashboard.

Commonly made mistakes

Connecting with an account that has not been verified yet. With Mollie that is possible, but your connection then stays in test mode until you connect again after the approval. See Test mode above. With Stripe, payments only go through once your account has been activated.

Choosing the wrong account on the permission screen. If you have several accounts with that provider, read what is on the screen before you click.

Connecting a second provider "just to try". A new connection immediately becomes the active provider. So always check afterwards whether the green pill Active for the ticket shop is on the right provider.

Thinking that connecting is enough. Which payment methods your visitor sees, you switch on in the provider's dashboard, not here.

Trying it as an Administrator. You do not even see this menu then. Ask the owner.

What if …

What if I end up with an error message after connecting?

If you come back with The connection was cancelled., you refused on the permission screen or closed the window. If it says The provider returned an error while connecting., try again and check with your provider whether your account is in order.

If you get an error page instead of the Payments screen, your attempt has expired: the connection has to be completed within a quarter of an hour. If you went to fetch a coffee in between, simply start again from Settings → Payments.

What if the button is not there?

Three possibilities: you do not have the Owner role (then you do not see the whole screen), the provider is not switched on in this installation (then there is a red sentence saying that it has not been set up on the platform yet), or you are already connected (then you see Disconnect instead of the connect button).

What if I want to switch providers in the middle of an advance sale?

That is possible. Connect the new one alongside; it immediately becomes the active provider. Leave the old one connected for as long as you still have tickets running from it: a refund of those old orders automatically goes via the old provider.

What if I have lost my Bancontact Pro key?

Request a new one from your bank. We cannot show it to you: it is stored encrypted and disappears from the screen after saving.

Frequently asked questions

Do you see my password with the provider? No. You type that in on their own site. We only get a permission back, and you withdraw that with Disconnect.

Can I do the connecting on a phone? Technically yes, but do not: you have to sign in on two sites and be able to read a permission screen calmly.

Can I test before I really sell? Yes, and so you should. See Testing with a payment of 1 cent.

Why do I see both Bancontact Pay and Bancontact Pro? Because they are two things. Bancontact Pro is what you apply for and connect here; that is where your key comes from. Bancontact Pay is the app your visitor scans the QR with. Until March 2026 they were both called Payconiq. See Applying for Bancontact Pro.

What happens to my tickets if I disconnect? Nothing. Tickets, orders and scans stay. Only new payments via that provider are no longer possible.
